The US Federal Reserve has raised interest rates for the first time in more than three years in an effort to contain inflation and slow the rise in prices.
The benchmark interest rate increased by 0.25 percentage points, moving from a range of 3.50%-3.75% to 3.75%-4%.
According to the US central bank, inflation remains high despite the economy continuing to grow at a solid pace.
In practice, higher interest rates make borrowing more expensive, including mortgages, credit cards and business loans.
At the same time, higher rates can encourage saving and reduce spending, helping to ease pressure on prices.
This is the first interest rate increase in the United States since July 2023 and marks a shift in monetary policy following the last rate cut in December 2025.
The measure could also affect investment and economic growth, as households and businesses face higher borrowing costs.
The Federal Reserve also indicated that it may raise rates again if inflation remains above its 2% target.
