Mondlane Promises Revelations About Mozambique's Ruling Regime During Trial

Mondlane Promises Revelations About Mozambique's Ruling Regime During Trial
By Isabel Dalciana 3 min

Mozambican politician Venâncio Mondlane has pledged to expose alleged irregularities and political interference in state institutions during his trial, scheduled for 17 November at the Supreme Court, describing the proceedings as an opportunity to reveal what he claims are mechanisms of political influence over Mozambique's justice system.

Speaking during a live broadcast on his official Facebook page, Mondlane argued that the case goes beyond the charges brought against him, maintaining that the institutions responsible for the proceedings will also face public scrutiny.

"It is the first time that the regime itself, while thinking it is putting someone on trial, is also being put on trial," the politician declared, referring to the Government, the Supreme Court and the Attorney General's Office (PGR).

The former presidential candidate, who once again described the proceedings as the "trial of the century", believes the hearing could provide a significant opportunity to reveal the political and judicial developments that, in his view, led to the charges brought by prosecutors.

Mondlane announced that his legal team is preparing a detailed written defence, supported by legal arguments, which will be translated into English, French, Italian and German, with the aim of bringing international attention to the case and the political events surrounding it.

According to the politician, the documents to be presented could surprise the public. He claimed that Mozambicans would be "stunned" and "shocked" when the information he intends to disclose becomes public.

During his address, Mondlane strongly criticised the Public Prosecutor's Office, accusing it of bringing politically motivated charges and acting in defence of the ruling establishment. These allegations reflect the politician's position and do not constitute judicial findings regarding the institutions concerned.

The opposition figure argued that challenging the proceedings presents an opportunity to examine the functioning of Mozambique's judicial system, particularly the independence of state institutions and their relationship with political power.

Mondlane also recalled his decision to return to Mozambique after spending approximately three months in exile, saying he was prepared to face the consequences of the trial, including a possible conviction.

The proceedings are linked to the demonstrations that followed Mozambique's general elections on 9 October 2024, a period marked by protests and clashes in several parts of the country.

As part of the case, prosecutors have accused Venâncio Mondlane of offences including public advocacy of crime, incitement to collective disobedience, public incitement to commit crimes, incitement to terrorism and encouragement of terrorist acts.

The hearing was initially scheduled for 6 October but was subsequently postponed to 17 November following a request from the defence, which cited scheduling conflicts.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court rejected a request to broadcast the trial live, maintaining restrictions on audiovisual recording inside the courtroom. The decision was challenged by Mondlane's legal team, which had sought broader public access to the proceedings.

Despite the restrictions on television and digital broadcasting, the trial is expected to take place in a public hearing, subject to courtroom capacity and access arrangements.

The case has attracted considerable attention in Mozambique's political and judicial landscape because of the nature of the charges, the involvement of a prominent opposition figure and disagreements between the defence and judicial authorities over the conduct of the proceedings.

With the trial scheduled to begin in November, Mondlane has reaffirmed his intention to use his defence to challenge the accusations and present evidence that, he claims, could call into question the conduct of the institutions responsible for the case.

The allegations announced by the politician have not yet been established in court, and it will be for the judicial authorities to examine the evidence and legal arguments presented by both sides.
