Mozambique's instant payment system, Metix, has recorded a 300% increase in average daily transactions since its launch in March 2026, reaching approximately 12,000 transactions per day in October, compared with around 3,000 operations initially.
The figures were announced on Wednesday, October 28, by the Governor of the Bank of Mozambique, Felisberto Navalha, during the opening of the institution's 51st Consultative Council meeting, held in Tete Province.
According to the governor, the increase reflects growing adoption of the platform, which enables users to transfer money between different banks in real time, without being restricted by traditional banking hours.
"Since then, the average daily number of transactions has increased from approximately 3,000 to around 12,000 in October 2026, demonstrating growing adoption of this system," Navalha said.
Metix was officially launched on March 16, 2026, under the leadership of former central bank governor Rogério Zandamela, with the aim of making interbank transfers faster, more accessible and more efficient.
The platform operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including weekends and public holidays, allowing funds to be transferred between bank accounts within seconds.
One of its main advantages for individual customers is the ability to make transfers without paying transaction fees, using mobile banking applications, internet banking services and USSD codes.
The USSD feature enables customers to access the service through basic mobile phones, even without an internet connection, helping to expand access to digital financial services.
Operated by the Mozambique Interbank Company (SIMO), Metix brings together commercial banks, microbanks, electronic money institutions and other payment service providers authorised by the central bank.
The system also requires the participation of electronic money institutions operating mobile wallets, aiming to strengthen interoperability between different payment platforms across the country.
The increase in Metix transactions comes amid the growing use of digital financial services in Mozambique, where electronic platforms are playing an increasingly important role in everyday payments and money transfers.
Despite the significant growth in transaction volumes, the Bank of Mozambique has not disclosed the total monetary value processed daily through Metix, providing only figures on the number of transactions.
With an average of 12,000 daily operations, the platform is strengthening its position within Mozambique's financial system, offering an alternative to conventional bank transfers and contributing to the modernisation of payment services nationwide.
