Ethiopian Airlines Launches Flights Between Nacala and Addis Ababa

Ethiopian Airlines Launches Flights Between Nacala and Addis Ababa
By Hemerson Chiziane 3 min

**Ethiopian Airlines officially launched scheduled flights between Nacala, in Mozambique's northern Nampula Province, and Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, on Tuesday, October 27. The new route will operate three times a week, connecting passengers to a global network of more than 130 destinations.**

The city of Nacala, in Mozambique's Nampula Province, has gained a new international air connection following the inaugural Ethiopian Airlines flight between Nacala and Addis Ababa on Tuesday, October 27. The service will operate three times a week, strengthening northern Mozambique's connectivity with international markets.

The new route gives passengers travelling from Nacala access to Ethiopian Airlines' global network of more than 130 destinations across several continents, through connections at the airline's main hub in Addis Ababa.

The inaugural ceremony was attended by Nampula Provincial Governor Eduardo Abdula, who highlighted the strategic importance of the new route for regional economic development, particularly in trade, tourism and logistics.

"There are events whose significance goes beyond the ceremony itself. This is one of them," the governor said, as quoted by the Ikweli news portal.

According to Abdula, the airline's arrival marks an important step in positioning Nacala as an economic and logistics hub, given the city's port infrastructure and commercial potential.

"Today, Ethiopian Airlines connects Addis Ababa to Nacala. With this connection, one of our largest ports also gains a new air gateway to the world," he stated.

The governor also described the airline's decision to operate in Nacala as international recognition of the city's economic and strategic importance.

"One of Africa's largest airlines looked at Nacala, saw an opportunity and decided to invest. It is a sign of confidence that honours us," he added.

The new route comes as Mozambique seeks to strengthen its transport infrastructure and improve the movement of people and goods to stimulate investment and regional economic integration.

Nacala is home to one of the country's major deep-water ports and serves as a strategic gateway along the Nacala Development Corridor, an important trade route connecting Mozambique with neighbouring Southern African countries, particularly Malawi and Zambia.

Against this backdrop, the air connection to Addis Ababa could facilitate business travel, attract international visitors and expand commercial opportunities in northern Mozambique.

During the ceremony, Abdula also stressed the need to decentralise economic opportunities and international connections rather than concentrating them in a limited number of regions.

"Mozambique cannot develop if opportunities and major international connections remain concentrated in only a few parts of the country," he emphasised.

The governor added that every province should be able to benefit from its economic potential by making better use of its natural resources, geographical location and existing infrastructure.

With Ethiopian Airlines beginning operations, Nacala strengthens its position within the international air transport network, opening up new opportunities for mobility, tourism and economic cooperation in Nampula Province and across northern Mozambique.
