The meeting took place as part of the Mozambican Head of State’s working visit to the Russian capital, where he is attending the Third Russia-Africa Summit at the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
According to the Mozambique News Agency (AIM), discussions focused on deepening the longstanding ties of friendship and cooperation between the two countries, with particular emphasis on expanding economic and commercial partnerships.
Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Daniel Chapo stressed the importance of transforming the historical relationship between Mozambique and Russia into concrete opportunities for cooperation capable of strengthening economic ties.
“We are here, once again, to further strengthen our historical ties of friendship and cooperation, and particularly to expand them into economic and commercial relations,” the Mozambican President stated.
Chapo also reiterated the importance of maintaining bilateral relations, emphasising that both countries should preserve the connections established over recent decades.
“We must always remain united, our countries and our brotherly peoples,” he declared.
The renewed focus on economic cooperation comes as Mozambique seeks to diversify its international partnerships, explore new investment opportunities and strengthen trade relations with different markets.
Daniel Chapo’s visit to Moscow is part of a diplomatic agenda aimed at strengthening cooperation with the Russian Federation, including contacts with representatives of Russian institutions and companies.
According to reports published by the national media, technical teams from both countries are working on the preparation of strategic cooperation agreements, which could be signed in 2027 during a future official visit by the Mozambican President to Russia.
Areas of interest include transport, logistics and energy, which are considered important for deepening economic relations and identifying investment opportunities in Mozambique.
Meanwhile, the Third Russia-Africa Summit provides a platform for dialogue aimed at promoting cooperation between Moscow and African countries across various sectors of mutual interest.
During the summit, Heads of State are expected to adopt three documents: the Declaration of the Third Russia-Africa Summit, the 2027–2029 Action Plan, and a declaration on cooperation in the peaceful use of artificial intelligence technologies.
Daniel Chapo’s participation marks his first attendance at the summit, at a time when Mozambique is seeking to strengthen international economic relations and create favourable conditions for attracting new investment.
Despite the interest expressed by both sides, no new investments or concrete trade agreements were announced during the meeting with Dmitry Medvedev, with the expansion of economic cooperation remaining a priority in bilateral discussions.
