Mozambique has requested access to military archives held in Portugal to deepen research into the country’s national liberation struggle and complete historical records related to Mozambican combatants.
The request was made by Minister for Combatants Nyeleti Mondlane following the signing in Maputo of a memorandum of understanding between Mozambique and Portugal on the preservation and study of military archival heritage.
According to Mondlane, a significant part of the documentation on military operations, personnel, detention sites, and political and military decisions from that period is currently held in Portuguese archives.
She said access to those records could help Mozambican researchers confirm the identities of combatants, locate graves, and recover information considered important to families.
The minister explained that the agreement also provides for Portuguese technical support in the recovery, digitisation, conservation, and enhancement of military archival material already held in Mozambique.
For the Mozambican Government, however, the objective goes beyond preserving documents kept in the country and includes the possibility of carrying out joint historical research based on records available in Portugal.
Portuguese Defence Minister Nuno Melo said access to the documents is important to ensure that history can be reconstructed on the basis of verifiable facts.
He added that preserving and opening the archives also represents a step towards reconciliation between the two countries and towards recognising the role of former combatants.
Portugal has around 130,000 living former combatants, while Mozambique has approximately 120,000, according to figures cited by Melo.
Authorities from both countries say cooperation in this area could help preserve their shared historical memory and make information about the liberation war more accessible to future generations.
