Mozambique’s Ministry of Health (MISAU) has introduced a traceability seal for medicines and medical supplies distributed through the National Health Service (SNS), in a move aimed at strengthening control and preventing theft and diversion.
The announcement was made by Health Minister Ussene Isse during the reception, in Maputo, of a new batch of medicines and medical-surgical supplies acquired with support from the World Bank.
According to the minister, the new seal will make it possible to track medicines throughout the supply chain and determine where products belonging to the SNS are located.
“It will help us fight theft and the diversion of medicines,” Ussene Isse said.
The minister explained that the aim is to ensure that medicines purchased for the public health system actually reach patients and are used in health facilities for their intended purposes.
Ussene Isse also called for tighter control by those responsible for health facilities, stressing that every medicine and medical item used must be properly accounted for.
“Every medicine and every glove we use must be accounted for,” he said.
The batch received is valued at around USD 35 million, with 50% of the amount already financed with support from the World Bank.
MISAU expects more medicines and kits to arrive, which will be distributed to health facilities and community health posts across the country.
World Bank representative Fily Sissoko said the introduction of traceability could improve accountability in the management of medicines.
According to Sissoko, the system will allow authorities to follow products from the supply chain to the point of use, while also helping to identify stock shortages and distribution failures.
The introduction of the seal is part of efforts by the health sector to improve medicine control and ensure that products intended for the SNS reach patients.
