Public minibus operators in Maputo City will be required to use standardised route identification signs, in a move aimed at improving monitoring and making it easier for passengers to identify and report irregularities.
The Maputo Municipal Police has launched a one-week awareness campaign at the Zimpeto Bus Terminal to guide operators on the regularisation of the signs used on public minibuses, commonly known in Mozambique as “chapas”.
According to Municipal Police spokesperson José Ganhane, some operators are currently circulating without route signs, while others use poorly visible lettering or difficult-to-read fonts.
The authorities say this makes it harder to monitor routes and limits passengers’ ability to report practices such as route diversions and the shortening of scheduled journeys.
The new guidelines will cover aspects such as font size, colours and other features intended to make route information clearer and easier to identify.
Ganhane warned that, once the awareness campaign ends, operators who fail to comply with the rules may face penalties.
Sanctions may include fines equivalent to two minimum wages, as well as suspension from operating until the vehicle is brought into compliance.
