Maputo Municipal Council will strengthen enforcement along the capital’s beaches and coastal areas, while maintaining the ban on the sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages during the 2026-2027 beach season.
The measure was announced by the Councillor for Economic Activities and Tourism, Alexandre Muianga, during the official launch of the new beach season on Wednesday, 16 September.
According to the municipality, the decision to maintain the restrictions follows positive results recorded since the measure was introduced in February, particularly improvements in safety, public order and cleanliness in beach areas.
During the new season, municipal authorities plan to intensify inspections, patrols and environmental monitoring along Maputo’s coastline, with particular attention to areas considered most critical.
Between January and May this year, the municipality inspected around 2,300 vehicles in beach areas. Of these, 66 vehicles were denied access to parking areas near locations such as Mercado do Frango and the Magumba area.
Muianga said the municipality aims to improve on the results achieved during the previous beach season and strengthen measures designed to prevent situations that could compromise the safety of beachgoers and the orderly use of public beaches.
Awareness campaigns are already underway, including the installation of educational and information billboards at the main access points and areas with the highest concentration of visitors.
The ban covers both the sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages on beaches and in coastal areas under the management of Maputo Municipal Council.
