Authorities have seized 17,279 units of alcoholic beverages valued at around 1.3 million meticais during an inspection operation carried out in Matola, Maputo Province.

The operation was conducted by the Inspectorate-General for Food and Economic Safety (IGSAE) at four commercial establishments to assess compliance with new rules governing the production, sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages.

According to IGSAE Inspector-General Shaquila Mohamed, the seized drinks, mostly chivochongo, are valued at 1,318,211 meticais.

Authorities suspect that some of the products were manufactured using pure ethyl alcohol, a raw material prohibited for the production of this type of beverage.

Inspectors also found alcoholic drinks without tax stamps, rolls of unused stamps, labelling materials and products without the mandatory information in Portuguese.

The operation resulted in the closure of three of the four establishments inspected. Samples of the beverages were also collected for laboratory analysis.

IGSAE said current legislation requires alcoholic beverages to be produced from fruit or grains and prohibits the use of pure ethyl alcohol or synthetic alcohol.

The seized products are expected to be destroyed once the required legal procedures have been completed.

During the inspection, officers also found a pistol and nine rounds of ammunition at one of the establishments. The owner presented an expired firearms licence and failed to provide the corresponding registration document.

The case was referred to the police and judicial authorities.

The operation was carried out with the involvement of the Attorney-General’s Office (PGR) and the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM).
