The Lichinga City Judicial Court on Tuesday acquitted Luís Jumo, president of the Lichinga Municipal Council, in a case in which he was accused of alleged corruption and abuse of office.
The ruling was handed down by the court’s First Section, which found that there was insufficient evidence to hold the mayor criminally responsible for the charges brought against him.
In the same case, Armindo Omar, head of the Procurement Management and Execution Unit (UGEA) at Lichinga Municipal Council, was sentenced to two years in prison.
Case No. 126-A/2026 was brought by the Niassa Provincial Anti-Corruption Office and concerned public procurement procedures carried out by the municipality.
Among the cases examined was the hiring of Yao-Informática to supply ten containers for solid waste collection in the city of Lichinga.
According to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the company did not hold the licence required to supply that type of equipment. Prosecutors also alleged that the company had repeatedly benefited from tenders launched by the municipality.
The contract for the purchase of the ten containers was valued at approximately 4.9 million meticais, including VAT.
Several witnesses were heard during the trial, including municipal employees and representatives linked to the company involved in the case.
After assessing the evidence presented, the court concluded that there were insufficient grounds to convict Luís Jumo and ordered his acquittal.
Armindo Omar, meanwhile, was found responsible for the offences attributed to him and sentenced to two years in prison.
