ANAMOLA president Venâncio Mondlane has reported the death of Ilídio Facitela Gustavo, a party mobiliser in Morrumbene district, Inhambane Province, saying the victim was one of the witnesses listed for his trial before the Supreme Court.
According to Mondlane, Ilídio Gustavo was allegedly abducted and later killed, although no further details have been released about the circumstances surrounding the case.
“The ANAMOLA mobiliser in Morrumbene district, Ilídio Facitela Gustavo, was abducted and murdered. He was, coincidentally, one of my witnesses for the trial scheduled at the Supreme Court,” Mondlane wrote on social media.
So far, no public information has been released by the authorities regarding those responsible or the possible motive behind the alleged crime.
The claim comes as Mondlane continues to accuse the authorities of political persecution against members and supporters of the National Alliance for a Free and Autonomous Mozambique (ANAMOLA).
In May, the politician submitted a report to the Attorney General’s Office claiming that 436 cases of “extreme violence” had been recorded against members of the party, including 56 deaths.
The case also comes as the Supreme Court considers a request to postpone Mondlane’s trial, which had initially been scheduled to begin on 6 October.
The request was submitted by his defence team, which cited scheduling conflicts. The Public Prosecutor’s Office has already given its opinion, and the Supreme Court is now expected to set a new date.
Mondlane faces criminal proceedings linked to the protests that followed Mozambique’s 2024 general elections.
The charges against him include public advocacy of crime, incitement to collective disobedience, public instigation to commit crimes, instigation of terrorism and incitement to terrorism.
According to the prosecution, the case is based, among other elements, on appeals made by Mondlane through social media during the post-election protest period.
In September 2025, Mondlane took office as a member of the Council of State after finishing second in the presidential election.
The Council of State later suspended his immunity to allow the criminal case to proceed.
