At least five people were killed and several others injured after a semi-public passenger vehicle veered off the road and overturned in Ancuabe district, Cabo Delgado province.
The accident occurred at around 3:00 p.m. in the Intutupue area, when the vehicle, travelling from Pemba to Montepuez, reportedly lost control after a tyre on its right side burst.
According to the head of the Provincial Traffic Police Department, Aniceto Magome, the tyre burst is believed to have caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle, which subsequently overturned.
Authorities confirmed five deaths, while the total number of injured passengers had yet to be determined.
The survivors were initially assisted and taken to nearby health facilities, with some later transferred to Pemba Provincial Hospital for further treatment.
Cabo Delgado Governor Valige Tauabo said at least seven survivors were receiving medical assistance at Metoro Health Centre, in Ancuabe district.
Information gathered from survivors indicates that some passengers had raised concerns about the condition of one of the vehicle’s tyres before the journey began.
According to Tauabo, one survivor reported that, before the vehicle departed from Pemba for Montepuez, one of the minibus tyres appeared to be worn.
Authorities are, on a preliminary assessment, pointing to a possible mechanical failure as the cause of the accident.
The Traffic Police has again urged motorists and transport operators to regularly inspect the mechanical condition of their vehicles, particularly before undertaking long-distance journeys.
The accident comes only weeks after another major road crash in Zavala district, Inhambane province, where 24 people were killed and two others injured following a head-on collision between a passenger vehicle and a truck belonging to the Mozambique Armed Defence Forces.
