Brazilians registered to vote in Mozambique took part this Sunday, 4 October, in the first round of Brazil’s General Elections, with Senator Flávio Bolsonaro of the Liberal Party (PL) receiving more votes than incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva at the polling station in Maputo.

According to the voting machine report posted after polls closed, Flávio Bolsonaro finished 24 votes ahead of Lula, a difference of around 11 percentage points.

Voting took place in the Overseas Electoral Zone, at Polling Location 1015, Section 0207, which also includes Section 0501. The electronic voting machine opened at 8:00 a.m. and closed at 5:03 p.m., Maputo time.

The other four presidential candidates received a combined total of 12 votes, representing 5.6% of the valid votes cast at the polling station.

The vote was also marked by a high abstention rate. Of the 557 registered voters, only 228 went to the polls, representing a turnout of 40.9%.

A total of 329 registered voters did not cast their ballots, bringing the abstention rate to 59.1%.

The voting report also recorded 214 candidate votes, two blank ballots and 12 invalid votes.

The results refer exclusively to the polling station in Maputo and do not represent the overall outcome of Brazil’s elections, which were also held across Brazil and at several overseas polling stations.
