Cabo Delgado and the northern part of Nampula Province are among the areas most affected by food insecurity in Mozambique, amid armed conflict, high food prices and declining household purchasing power.
According to the Food Security Monitor by the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA), around 3.5 million Mozambicans are currently facing acute food insecurity.
The report says about 18% of the population assessed is in this situation, placing Mozambique among the most vulnerable countries in Southern Africa.
Conditions are particularly concerning in conflict-affected areas of Cabo Delgado and northern Nampula, where violence continues to limit access to food, markets and livelihoods.
AGRA warns that the situation could worsen in the coming months, especially as the lean season approaches and household food stocks decline.
Between October and January, some areas could deteriorate into crisis conditions, driven by high prices of basic food items and reduced purchasing power.
The report also notes that although maize prices fell by 2% in August, they remain 10.7% higher than in the same period last year.
Rice prices, meanwhile, rose by 3.6% over the month, reflecting supply pressures and import-related costs.
The situation could also be worsened by climate conditions. AGRA warns that a strong El Niño event is developing and could bring below-average rainfall and higher-than-normal temperatures across much of Southern Africa during the 2026/27 agricultural season.
This could affect agricultural production and increase the vulnerability of households that depend directly on farming for food and income.
