The National Alliance for a Free and Autonomous Mozambique (ANAMOLA) says 57 of its members have been killed since August 2025 and is calling for a thorough and transparent investigation into the cases.
According to party spokesperson Alberto Manhique, the number rose to 57 following the death of Ilídio Facitela Gustavo, an ANAMOLA mobiliser in Morrumbene District, Inhambane Province.
Gustavo was reportedly abducted by unidentified individuals and later found dead in Homoíne District. His funeral was held this week.
ANAMOLA says Gustavo was among those listed as witnesses in the court case involving party leader Venâncio Mondlane, linked to the post-election demonstrations that followed the October 2024 general elections.
In addition to the 57 deaths, the party says it has recorded 436 other cases of what it describes as “extreme violence” involving its members or organisational structures.
ANAMOLA argues that the authorities should not only investigate the cases individually, but also determine whether there is a broader pattern behind the reported violence.
The party has again accused the authorities of failing to provide adequate protection to its members and supporters and is calling for those responsible to be held accountable.
The Decide Electoral Platform has also raised concerns about violence involving opposition party members and has called for investigations capable of identifying perpetrators and preventing further incidents.
So far, the authorities have not publicly presented findings confirming a connection between all the cases reported by ANAMOLA or establishing a common political motive.
The party is now urging state institutions to clarify the circumstances surrounding the deaths and provide greater protection for citizens involved in political activity.
