Mozambican Hip-Hop collective 9NaKons will perform on 10 October at the Back to the City Festival in Johannesburg, taking Mozambican Hip-Hop to one of Africa’s major urban culture events.
The performance will take place at Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown, as part of a special edition celebrating the festival’s 20th anniversary.
Back to the City brings together music, graffiti, dance, skateboarding, fashion, MC battles and other forms of Hip-Hop culture. Over the years, the event has grown into one of Africa’s leading platforms connecting artists, producers and urban culture audiences.
This year’s edition is expected to bring together dozens of artists, DJs and graffiti artists, alongside well-known names from South African and international Hip-Hop.
For 9NaKons, the performance represents an opportunity to showcase the identity, experiences and lyrical expression of Mozambican Hip-Hop to an international audience.
The collective has been building its presence within Mozambique’s Hip-Hop scene through several projects and initiatives linked to the genre.
The group’s participation also comes in a symbolic year for Johannesburg, as the city marks the 20th anniversary of Back to the City, 50 years since the 16 June 1976 uprising and its 140th anniversary.
9NaKons’ appearance at the festival places Mozambican Hip-Hop before an international audience and strengthens the presence of Mozambican artists on major cultural platforms across the continent.
