Tete: Death Toll from Changara Road Accident Rises to 14
By Jackson Hélder 2 min

The death toll from a road accident in Mazóe, Changara district, in Mozambique’s Tete province, has risen from 13 to 14 after another victim died on Saturday night, October 17. The collision, involving an interprovincial passenger bus and a minibus used for public transport, also left 16 people injured.

According to Jone Cherene, Director of Emergency Services at Tete Provincial Hospital, nine people died at the scene of the accident, while the remaining victims succumbed to their injuries later.

Of the 16 injured passengers, three were discharged from hospital on the same day, while the others remained under medical care and clinical observation.

Cherene said none of the hospitalised patients was considered to be in immediate danger of death, although one of the injured had suffered a severe traumatic brain injury. He added that the patient was responding positively to medical treatment.

On Sunday morning, October 18, Tete Governor Domingos Viola visited the Provincial Hospital to check on the injured passengers and assess their health conditions.

During the visit, the governor expressed solidarity with the victims and their families and distributed essential supplies to those affected by the accident.

Regarding the causes of the collision, Viola said the authorities were working to establish the circumstances surrounding the accident but had not yet reached any conclusions about responsibility.

Meanwhile, several survivors reported that they were returning from a religious gathering and travelling towards Tete city when the accident occurred.

According to their accounts, a bus operated by the transport company Space Liner allegedly crossed into the opposite lane and collided with the minibus carrying the victims.

One survivor also claimed that the bus was travelling at high speed and that its driver had attempted to avoid potholes in the road, a manoeuvre that may have contributed to the collision.

However, these accounts have not been officially confirmed, and the relevant authorities are continuing their investigations to determine the exact cause of the accident.

The tragedy comes amid concerns over road safety in Tete province. Figures covering the first nine months of 2026 indicate that the province recorded 24 road accidents, resulting in 42 deaths.

With 14 fatalities and 16 injuries, the Changara accident has further increased the province’s road death toll, once again highlighting concerns over road safety and travelling conditions on major passenger transport routes.
