Maputo Seeks Chinese Investors to Develop KaTembe and KaNyaka

Maputo Seeks Chinese Investors to Develop KaTembe and KaNyaka
By Francisco Novela 2 min

Maputo Municipal Council is seeking Chinese investors to support urban development, housing and tourism projects in the municipal districts of KaTembe and KaNyaka, as part of a strategy to attract foreign investment and stimulate economic growth in Mozambique’s capital.

Maputo Mayor Rasaque Manhique presented the investment opportunities on Saturday, October 17, during an international meeting held in Fuzhou, Fujian Province, China, where he highlighted the city’s economic potential and the importance of establishing new partnerships to support its development.

According to the newspaper Jornal Notícias, Manhique participated in the Dialogue on Cooperation between Local Governments and International Friendship Cities of the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road, held from October 16 to 19, bringing together representatives from different countries to discuss economic cooperation and urban development opportunities.

During his address, Manhique identified KaTembe as one of the areas with significant potential for new investment, particularly in housing, commerce and tourism.

The mayor explained that the district’s strategic location and its connection to central Maputo through the Maputo–KaTembe Bridge offer advantages for the development of residential properties, commercial infrastructure and tourism facilities.

Regarding KaNyaka, which includes Inhaca Island, the municipality aims to attract investment in sustainable tourism, including the construction of hotels, eco-resorts and other facilities designed to make use of the island’s tourism potential and its natural and marine resources.

Beyond these two districts, Manhique presented investment opportunities in other priority sectors, including urban infrastructure, transport, digitalisation, renewable energy and economic activities.

The mayor assured potential investors that Maputo remains open to both domestic and foreign investment, expressing the municipality’s willingness to streamline administrative procedures, reduce bureaucratic barriers and promote public-private partnerships.

Manhique also highlighted Maputo’s strategic geographical position as a major commercial gateway connecting Mozambique to Southern African markets through the Port of Maputo and the road and railway networks that facilitate the movement of people and goods across the region.

The municipality’s participation in the international meeting in China represents an opportunity to promote the capital’s economic potential, establish contacts with prospective international partners and mobilise resources for new development projects.

Through this initiative, Maputo Municipal Council hopes to attract investment that will support urban expansion, stimulate economic activity, create jobs and improve living conditions for residents.

Earlier in October, the municipality had also organised an investment forum dedicated to KaNyaka, presenting opportunities in ecotourism, hospitality and the conservation and sustainable use of Inhaca Island’s biodiversity.

So far, no investment amounts, financing agreements or specific projects resulting from the meetings in China have been publicly announced.
