Mozambique’s Nampula Province is facing a measles outbreak that has already spread to 10 districts, with 1,498 cases and three deaths recorded, according to provincial health authorities.
Cases have been reported in Nampula, Nacarôa, Nacala-Porto, Malema, Memba, Mecubúri, Muecate, Mogovolas, Eráti and Liúpo districts.
According to Nampula Provincial Health Director Selma Xavier, new cases continue to be recorded, prompting authorities to strengthen vaccination efforts in the most affected areas.
Health authorities recently carried out an emergency vaccination campaign in seven priority districts with the highest concentration of cases.
“As we know, a response vaccination campaign requires funding and additional resources, including extra vaccines. At this stage, we have prioritised the districts with the highest number of cases,” Xavier said.
In the remaining districts, vaccination is continuing through mobile health teams, particularly in communities located far from health facilities.
The Provincial Health Director said that a significant number of people affected by the outbreak had never been vaccinated.
“Most of the people affected by this outbreak are people who have never been vaccinated,” she said.
According to Xavier, the work of mobile vaccination teams has faced several challenges this year, including fuel shortages in some districts.
So far, around 500,000 children under the age of five have been reached through vaccination activities across the province.
Authorities are also preparing a broader national vaccination campaign that is expected to include children up to the age of 15, as measles cases are also being recorded among children older than five.
The campaign is being prepared by Mozambique’s Ministry of Health in coordination with partners, including the World Health Organization and UNICEF.
