Maputo: Fake Traffic Officer Arrested On Agostinho Neto Avenue
Por Délio Timane 2 min

The Mozambique Republic Police (PRM) have arrested a man in Maputo City suspected of posing as a traffic police officer to inspect vehicles and illegally collect money from motorists.

The arrest took place on Agostinho Neto Avenue, in the Polana Cimento B area, where the suspect was allegedly caught wearing a police uniform.

According to the PRM, the man had previously been a member of the police force but was expelled in 2023. Authorities say the uniform he was wearing had not been returned after he left the force.

Police suspect that he used the uniform to stop drivers, carry out fake traffic inspections and demand illegal payments.

The PRM also said the suspect has a criminal record. In 2022, he was reportedly arrested and later convicted of aggravated robbery in the 1.º de Maio neighbourhood.

After serving his sentence and being released, the man is alleged to have continued using parts of the police uniform despite no longer being a member of the force.

During his presentation to the media, the suspect chose not to comment on the allegations against him.

The arrest drew the attention of people along Agostinho Neto Avenue, and images of the incident later circulated on social media.

The PRM in Maputo City says it is continuing to investigate the suspect’s activities to determine whether he may be linked to other cases involving fake inspections and illegal collections from motorists.

Police have urged citizens to report similar incidents and said enforcement operations will continue in an effort to stop illegal practices on the capital’s roads.
