The Matola Municipality will subsidise the costs of obtaining and renewing driving licences, as well as the licensing of motorcycle taxi drivers operating in the city.
The announcement was made by Matola Mayor Júlio Parruque during a meeting with operators in the sector.
According to Parruque, the municipality recognises the importance of motorcycle taxi services in transporting people and goods, particularly in areas that are not adequately served by public transport.
However, he said the activity needs to be better organised and operated in line with road safety and traffic regulations.
Training at driving schools and the issuing of operating permits are among the measures considered important to improve the quality and safety of the service.
“For us, motorcycle taxi drivers are young partners of our municipality. We want to move forward together in an organised and positive way,” Parruque said.
Operators also believe that access to training and driving licences could help reduce road accidents and improve their knowledge of traffic rules.
Motorcycle taxi driver Mário Chambal said training is essential to improve operators’ skills and make the service safer.
The National Institute of Road Transport, INATRO, says motorcycle taxi services have been growing and need greater regulation and formalisation.
According to INATRO, holding a driving licence is expected to become a key requirement for anyone wishing to operate this type of transport in the near future.
Through the initiative, the Matola Municipality aims to support the formalisation of motorcycle taxi drivers and promote a safer and more organised service in the city.
