Judicial Sources Want Forquilha Named Co-Defendant in Venâncio Case

Judicial Sources Want Forquilha Named Co-Defendant in Venâncio Case
By Francisco Novela 2 min

Sources linked to Mozambique’s Attorney General’s Office (PGR) argue that Albino Forquilha, president of PODEMOS, should be treated as a co-defendant rather than only as a witness in the judicial case involving Venâncio Mondlane and the 2024 post-election protests.

The position comes amid continuing debate over the role of PODEMOS leaders during the period that followed the 9 October 2024 general elections, when Mondlane was politically backed by the party.

According to judicial sources cited by the media, questions have been raised over the Public Prosecutor’s decision to keep Forquilha as a witness in the case. Critics of that decision argue that the available indications linked to the protests could justify a different procedural status.

Albino Forquilha has previously confirmed that he is expected to appear before the court as a declarant, saying he intends to report only the facts known to him and cooperate with the judicial process.

Venâncio Mondlane is the main defendant in the case, which includes digital evidence collected from several institutions.

The proceedings also involve individuals and institutions called to provide information, including Forquilha, other PODEMOS officials, the Police of the Republic of Mozambique, the Roads Fund and Mozambique’s road network authorities.

Mondlane faces accusations related to the post-election demonstrations, including alleged public advocacy of crime, incitement to collective disobedience and instigation of terrorism.

The assessment of the evidence and any determination of criminal responsibility remain matters for the competent courts.

The debate surrounding Albino Forquilha does not mean that a judicial decision has been made to formally name him as a defendant. The position has so far been attributed to judicial sources and legal specialists, while the case continues through the courts.
