President Daniel Chapo has said that political differences among Mozambicans must not turn into violence, calling for dialogue, peace and unity as essential foundations for the country’s development.
Chapo was speaking during a three-day working visit to Maputo Province, where he again defended closer governance and greater direct contact between the State and local communities.
“We have different political parties, but that cannot lead us to attack our brother simply because he thinks differently from us,” the Head of State said.
According to the President, Mozambique can only move forward with stability if citizens are able to live together despite their political, religious, social and cultural differences.
“The main message we are taking to the Mozambican people is a message of peace, love and unity among Mozambicans,” he said.
Daniel Chapo stressed that peace should not be understood only as the absence of armed conflict, arguing that it begins with the way people relate to one another.
“Peace is not only about silencing the guns. Peace begins at home, within the family, between father, mother and children,” he said.
The President added that this spirit of peaceful coexistence should extend to neighbourhoods, municipalities, districts and provinces, contributing to stability across the country.
For Chapo, dialogue should be the main way of resolving disagreements and bringing together citizens with different views.
“If we have to convince someone about something, we do it through dialogue,” he said.
The Head of State also highlighted the importance of the inclusive national dialogue, arguing that Mozambicans with different political and social views should have spaces to discuss the country’s problems and seek common ground.
Chapo said peace, security and the ability to resolve differences through dialogue are essential conditions for Mozambique to advance economically and socially.
