At least 11 hectares of farmland were destroyed by fire in Lutete village, Muidumbe district, Cabo Delgado, in an attack residents attributed to suspected terrorists operating in the area.
The fire was reportedly set during the day on Tuesday and affected fields producing bananas, sugarcane and sesame, leaving several families without an important source of income.
“They burned a lot of things,” said one resident, who has since left the area and is now in Muidumbe.
The destruction of the crops is also raising fears of possible food shortages among local communities, as many farmers have abandoned their fields because of the threat of further attacks.
“It is sad because this was a source of income that many families have lost, and this could lead to hunger,” another local source said.
According to reports from the area, most farmers left the zone after the incident. District authorities are considering activating the Local Force to strengthen security and allow communities to resume agricultural activities.
Cabo Delgado has faced an armed insurgency since October 2017, carried out by groups linked to the Islamic State. The conflict has killed thousands of people and forced more than one million residents to flee their homes.
In recent periods, incursions attributed to the same groups have also been reported in the neighbouring provinces of Niassa and Nampula.
