The auction represents a shift in Mozambique’s gemstone trading model, as precious stones have traditionally been sold through international markets. The initiative allows domestic businesses to access locally produced gemstones directly, without having to participate in auctions abroad.
According to Castro Elias, Executive Secretary of the Kimberley Process Management Unit, at least four companies expressed interest in participating. He noted that the initiative could help improve transparency in gemstone transactions and increase government tax revenues.
Elias also highlighted that holding auctions domestically could stimulate the development of local gemstone processing and cutting industries, creating business opportunities and employment, particularly for young people.
The initiative also aims to encourage greater participation by Mozambican entrepreneurs in the sector, facilitate access to domestically produced gemstones and strengthen artisanal mining, an activity whose economic benefits remain limited.
Government Seeks to Increase the Value of Mineral Resources
Mozambique’s Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, Estêvão Pale, stressed the importance of promoting mineral resource trading within the domestic market, arguing that national auctions could contribute to greater transparency and economic value creation.
The minister emphasised that Mozambique intends to move towards a new phase of local mineral processing, reducing its dependence on exporting unprocessed raw materials.
One of the government’s priorities is to establish a national ruby brand, aimed at strengthening the identity and international positioning of Mozambican gemstones.
The statements were made during the Conference on Value Addition Based on Available Mineral and Energy Resources, held in Nacala. During the event, Pale inaugurated the Gemstones and Precious Metals Exhibition, part of the eighth edition of the Nampula Annual Gem Fair.
Mozambique Aims to Strengthen Its Position in the Global Ruby Market
Mozambique has been consolidating its position among the world’s leading ruby producers, particularly in Cabo Delgado Province, home to significant deposits of these precious gemstones.
In Montepuez, ruby mining has attracted international investment, including projects involving Gemfields and Fura Gems, helping raise Mozambique’s profile in the global gemstone market.
The economic significance of the sector was demonstrated in 2023 with the sale of the Estrela de Fura ruby, discovered in Mozambique by Fura Gems. Originally weighing 101 carats before being cut to 55.22 carats, the gemstone was sold at auction in New York for $34.8 million, setting a world record for a ruby sold at auction.
By hosting auctions domestically, the government hopes to retain a greater share of the economic benefits generated by mineral extraction, particularly through higher tax revenues, the development of gemstone cutting and processing businesses, and job creation.
According to information released following the auction, approximately 12 companies examined the gemstones, with four submitting financial bids. One offer, covering two lots of rubies, reached approximately $200,000.
