The city of Quelimane, capital of Zambézia Province, has been awarded Gold in the Human-CentriCity category at the Seoul Smart City Prize 2026 in South Korea.
The award recognises projects that promote smarter, more inclusive and people-centred cities.
Quelimane received the recognition through a certificate issued on 6 October 2026, linked to a project to establish the National Museum of Ethnology, History, Arts and Sciences of Zambézia.
The project promotes an approach that combines culture, knowledge, inclusion and climate resilience as part of the city’s urban transformation.
The initiative also seeks to demonstrate how cultural heritage and community participation can help address environmental and urban challenges, including the effects of climate change.
The Seoul Smart City Prize recognises cities and projects that present innovative solutions aimed at improving people’s quality of life and promoting more sustainable urban development.
With this award, Quelimane joins a group of cities internationally recognised for initiatives that place people, culture and resilience at the centre of urban development.
