By Hemerson Chiziane 2 min

Mozambique’s National Institute of Meteorology (INAM) has issued a warning for moderate to heavy rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and strong wind gusts, across several areas of Gaza, Inhambane, Sofala and Manica provinces.

According to the alert, rainfall could range between 30 and 50 millimetres within 24 hours, with some locations potentially receiving more than 50 millimetres over the same period.

In Gaza Province, the warning covers the districts of Massangena, Chicualacuala, Mapai, Chigubo, Manjacaze and Chongoene, as well as the city of Xai-Xai.

In Inhambane, the affected areas include Mabote, Funhalouro, Govuro, Inhassoro, Vilankulo, Massinga, Morrumbene, Panda, Homoíne and Zavala, together with the cities of Maxixe and Inhambane.

In Sofala Province, the alert covers Muanza, Nhamatanda, Dondo, Búzi, Chibabava and Machanga, as well as the city of Beira.

In Manica, the warning applies to the districts of Báruè, Macossa, Manica, Macate, Sussundenga, Gondola, Mossurize and Machaze, in addition to the city of Chimoio.

INAM said the weather system may bring thunderstorms and strong winds, increasing the risk of localised flooding, falling trees and other disruptions associated with severe weather.

The institute advised residents in the affected areas to take precautionary measures and to closely follow official weather updates.

The warning was issued at 10:00 a.m. on 5 October and remains valid until midnight on 6 October 2026.

INAM is expected to update the forecast as weather conditions evolve across the affected regions.
