The Catholic Church in Mozambique is demanding a swift clarification over the death of the Bishop of Quelimane, Dom Osório Citora Afonso, who was shot dead at his episcopal residence in Quelimane, Zambézia province.
The call was made by the Archbishop of Maputo and vice-president of the Episcopal Conference of Mozambique, Dom João Carlos Hatoa Nunes, who argues that the investigation must establish the truth and prevent further speculation surrounding the case.
Speaking to the Mozambique Information Agency, Dom João said the Church is awaiting clear answers about what happened inside the episcopal residence on the day of the bishop’s death.
“It is that truth that we want. What actually happened there in that house on that day,” the prelate said.
Dom Osório, 54, died after being shot inside his residence on 6 June. The circumstances surrounding his death remain under investigation.
For Dom João, the fact that the incident occurred inside the bishop’s own residence makes the case particularly concerning and reinforces the need for a thorough investigation.
The archbishop also said that several items were seized and may assist the investigation, including mobile phones and computers.
According to the Church official, the Catholic Church recognises that an investigation of this nature takes time, but considers it important for the findings to be made public once conclusive evidence is available.
Dom João warned that prolonged silence around the case could fuel rumours and different versions of what happened.
The Catholic Church has been calling on the authorities responsible for the investigation to clarify, in a transparent manner, what occurred at the episcopal residence and to establish any possible responsibilities.
Dom Osório Citora Afonso was Bishop of Quelimane, Apostolic Administrator of the Archdiocese of Beira and secretary-general of the Episcopal Conference of Mozambique.
His death caused deep concern within the Catholic Church and among the faithful, particularly because it occurred in a place considered safe and directly linked to the Church structure.
As the investigation continues, the Catholic hierarchy remains hopeful that the authorities will present conclusions capable of definitively clarifying the circumstances surrounding the bishop’s death.
