Maputo Municipal Council has announced plans to support the reconstruction of market stalls destroyed by a fire that broke out at Xikhelene Market on Friday, 25 September, destroying at least 15 commercial establishments and two warehouses.
The announcement was made by Maputo Mayor Rasaque Manhique during a visit to the market on Tuesday, 29 September, to assess the damage caused by the fire and meet with affected traders.
According to the mayor, assistance will be provided through the Maputo Municipal Infrastructure Company (EMIM), which will support the reconstruction of commercial facilities damaged by the blaze.
The initiative aims to create conditions for affected traders to resume their business activities and recover their sources of income following the losses caused by the fire.
The blaze destroyed at least 15 commercial establishments and two warehouses, affecting traders who depend on their businesses at the market to support their families.
Through the announced intervention, the municipality intends to help restore damaged infrastructure and facilitate the gradual return of traders to their workplaces.
However, the municipality has not yet disclosed the estimated reconstruction costs, the implementation timetable or the specific mechanisms through which assistance will be provided to affected traders.
