According to Miami Beach Police, Rick Ross, whose legal name is William Leonard Roberts II, voluntarily turned himself in to authorities before being taken to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.
The artist faces one felony charge of battery by strangulation and one misdemeanor battery charge.
According to the arrest warrant, the alleged incident took place on 28 August at the rapper’s residence on Star Island and was formally reported to police at the end of September.
The woman told investigators that she had been in a relationship with Ross for about a year and that the two were living together at the time of the alleged incident.
According to her statement, the rapper allegedly started an argument after she was tagged in a photo posted on Instagram.
The complainant alleged that Ross slapped her in the face and later, during another argument, assaulted her several times and tightened the collar of the sweatshirt she was wearing, making it difficult for her to breathe.
She also alleged that she was grabbed by the hair, pushed against a wall and struck in the face.
Police said they received photographs of the alleged injuries and reviewed surveillance footage from the residence.
Authorities said the evidence collected was sufficient to support the arrest and the continuation of legal proceedings.
Rick Ross Denies Allegations
The rapper denied the accusations and maintained his innocence.
“I am completely innocent of the fabricated charges made against me,” he said in a video posted on social media.
His lawyer, Bradley Horenstein, also denied the allegations and urged the public to allow the legal process to take its course before reaching conclusions.
During a court hearing held by videoconference, a Miami-Dade judge set total bail at 5,000 US dollars.
Rick Ross was later released on bail.
The court also ordered the rapper to have no direct or indirect contact with the alleged victim, including through social media or third parties.
He was also required to surrender any firearms in his possession and was prohibited from approaching the complainant’s home, workplace or school.
A preliminary hearing in the case is scheduled for 22 October.
Rick Ross, 50, is one of the best-known figures in American hip-hop and gained international recognition with songs including “Hustlin’”.
