Eduardo Mondlane University (UEM) is the higher education institution most preferred by Human Resources professionals when searching for talent in Mozambique, according to a national survey presented this week.
The study, titled the Human Resources Professionals’ Confidence Index in Higher Education Institutions, was conducted by LESHY, NHP Consultoria and BD Business Diversity and sought to assess recruiters’ perceptions of universities and their connection to the labour market.
In the overall results, UEM ranked first, followed by the Pedagogical University of Maputo and Joaquim Chissano University.
The survey was conducted between April and May 2026 and involved Human Resources professionals and students. Recruiters were asked, among other questions, which institution they would turn to if they had to select candidates based solely on the university they attended.
The authors of the study stressed, however, that the institution attended does not by itself determine a hiring decision. Technical and behavioural skills, professional experience, references, psychometric tests and interview performance also remain important factors in recruitment processes.
The research covered 27 national higher education institutions, including universities, higher institutes, polytechnic institutes and higher schools, as well as references to foreign institutions.
Despite UEM’s overall lead, the results show significant differences depending on the field of study.
In Education and Teacher Training, the Pedagogical University of Maputo accounted for 71.2% of preferences among Human Resources professionals.
In Law, International Relations and Governance, Joaquim Chissano University led with 48.1% of the choices.
In Communication, Arts and Culture, specialised institutions such as the Higher Institute of Arts and Communication and the School of Journalism recorded higher preference levels than UEM.
The study also identified sectors where employers face greater difficulties in finding qualified professionals. Different engineering specialisations were among the most frequently mentioned areas.
Information technology, oil and gas, auditing and compliance were also identified as sectors requiring stronger professional training.
The promoters of the study argue that higher education institutions should strengthen the practical component of their courses, keep pace with changes in the labour market, invest in research and build stronger links with companies and other organisations that employ graduates.
The first edition of the study could serve as a basis for the creation of an Observatory for Student Integration into the Labour Market, aimed at periodically collecting data on employability and the professional integration of young people.
