Two women have appeared before the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court in South Africa, accused of the murder of Jabulile Ntimba, one of nine women found dead over the past two months in the Ekurhuleni area, east of Johannesburg.
Fortunate Masilela and Tsakane Nester Msithini face charges of premeditated murder and obstruction of justice. The two women will remain in custody until 1 October, when the court is expected to consider their bail applications.
Authorities have stressed, however, that the two women are formally linked only to the investigation into Ntimba’s death. There is currently no public evidence connecting them to the other eight killings under investigation in the area.
Ntimba was found dead in Dawn Park, Boksburg. South African police are investigating whether her killing may have been linked to an alleged love triangle.
A man was also arrested alongside the two women but has not been formally charged. Investigations are continuing to determine whether he was involved.
The case comes amid growing concern in South Africa after nine women were found dead in Ekurhuleni since July.
Police have established a multidisciplinary team to investigate the killings and determine whether there are any links between the cases.
Most of the victims were young women in their 20s and 30s, and some were found in similar circumstances near roads and open areas.
The series of deaths has prompted fears among some residents that a serial killer could be operating in the area. Police have not confirmed that possibility.
Authorities say all possibilities remain under investigation and that each killing is being examined individually to determine whether any connection exists.
The discovery of several bodies within a short period has increased pressure on the authorities. Six bodies were found within just ten days, while four of the victims were discovered within a radius of approximately six kilometres.
Police have also confirmed the discovery of a tenth body in Soweto. However, no public link has so far been established between that case and the nine deaths being investigated in Ekurhuleni.
South African police say forensic specialists, data analysts and investigators have been deployed to help establish what happened and identify those responsible.
