The Port of Beira, in Mozambique's Sofala Province, is set to strengthen its cereal import and handling operations as part of the government's new strategy to centralise rice imports and improve the efficiency of port procedures.
The initiative follows an operational meeting between the Mozambique Cereals Institute (ICM), Cornelder de Moçambique and ICM Logistics, aimed at establishing coordination mechanisms to accelerate the reception and handling of rice and wheat through the port.
According to the Mozambique News Agency (AIM), the meeting took place at the Port of Beira and brought together an ICM delegation led by Deputy Director-General Carlos Langa and representatives of the two partner organisations to discuss procedures for improving import operations.
Under the new approach, ICM will play a central role in coordinating rice imports, seeking to strengthen oversight of incoming shipments and reduce logistical challenges associated with cargo handling.
One of the main measures discussed was the introduction of a Port Agent, who will be responsible for monitoring operations and ensuring faster processing of cereal imports.
The Port Agent will also represent ICM's interests during port operations, facilitating coordination between the various stakeholders, from the arrival of vessels to the handling of goods within the port.
During the meeting, priorities were also established for the berthing of vessels carrying rice and wheat, in accordance with Ministerial Diploma No. 31/2026 of 24 April.
The advance definition of these priorities is intended to improve operational planning, minimise potential delays and ensure greater predictability in the reception of cargo vessels.
Cooperation between ICM, Cornelder de Moçambique and ICM Logistics is expected to strengthen coordination between institutional management and port operations, contributing to more efficient handling of cereals destined for the domestic market.
With these measures, the Port of Beira will assume a strategic role in implementing the new rice import model, reinforcing its importance in Mozambique's national food supply chain.
Through this strategy, the government aims to establish clearer responsibilities among the institutions involved, improve oversight of imports and streamline procedures for the entry and handling of cereals in Mozambique.
