President Daniel Chapo, who is also Commander-in-Chief of the Defence and Security Forces, has pledged to strengthen support for members of the Mozambique Armed Defence Forces, while acknowledging challenges related to equipment, logistics, infrastructure and professionalisation.
The message was delivered as part of celebrations marking September 25, Mozambique Armed Forces Day.
Chapo highlighted the role of the military in defending the country’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and security, with particular reference to ongoing operations in northern Mozambique.
The Head of State also acknowledged the sacrifices made by soldiers deployed on different fronts, especially those who spend long periods away from their families.
“The nation recognises your sacrifice. The nation recognises your effort. The nation follows your mission,” he said.
Daniel Chapo also assured that the Government will continue to support and accompany the Armed Forces in carrying out their missions.
“You are not alone. Your Commander-in-Chief is with you 24 hours a day, seven days a week, whether it is sunny, raining or cold. Your Government is with you. The Mozambican people are with you,” he declared.
The President also called for greater attention to the protection of military personnel during operations, arguing that no mission should be carried out without adequate preparation and sufficient information.
“No soldier should be unnecessarily placed at risk,” he said.
Among the main challenges facing the Armed Forces, Chapo pointed to needs related to equipment, logistics, military infrastructure, sustainability and professionalisation.
The President said the Government will continue working to address these constraints and improve conditions within the FADM.
The Government has recently approved new social support measures for members of the Armed Forces, including a new Statute for FADM Social Services, which expands the number of beneficiaries and provides for services to be brought closer to military personnel.
Chapo also highlighted the role of the Armed Forces in supporting communities affected by natural disasters, arguing that the military’s mission goes beyond defence operations.
In his address, the President also said national defence should be regarded as a collective responsibility of all Mozambicans, calling for the preservation of peace, unity and national heritage.
The Head of State concluded his message by congratulating the Armed Forces for their work in defending Mozambique’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
