The Government has expressed concern over the decline in industrial production in Mozambique and called for greater investment in the local processing of domestic output as a way to reduce imports, create more jobs and add value to the economy.
The concern was raised by the Minister of Economy, Basílio Muhate, during a visit to the facilities of the Nurmamad Group of Companies in the Netia Administrative Post, Monapo district, in Nampula Province.
According to the minister, industrial production has been declining in recent years, a situation linked to shortages of raw materials, limited access to foreign currency and weak domestic production.
“The decline in industrial production concerns us. There are a number of actions that both the Government and the private sector need to take in order to better understand what is behind it,” he said.
Muhate explained that some industries continue to operate below their installed capacity, limiting domestic production and increasing dependence on imported goods.
The minister said Mozambique should invest more in processing raw materials locally and reduce the export of unprocessed products.
“If we do not process them, we will continue exporting raw products, and that does not create more jobs or investment,” he said.
During the visit, the minister toured production units for cooking oil, soap, toiletries and spaghetti, where he assessed the factory’s operations and production capacity.
The facility employs around 300 workers, both Mozambican and foreign nationals, and has the capacity to produce 600 tonnes of oil and 300 tonnes of soap per day.
Muhate also highlighted Nampula’s economic potential, pointing to the province as one of the regions with strong prospects for industrial and productive growth in the country.
According to the minister, the Government intends to continue implementing reforms aimed at improving the business environment and creating conditions for the private sector to increase production, invest more in manufacturing and become more competitive.
