Mozambique and Botswana are meeting this Friday, September 25, in Gaborone for the ninth session of the Permanent Joint Commission for Cooperation, with the aim of deepening and strengthening relations between the two countries.
The meeting will be co-chaired by Mozambique’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Maria Manuela Lucas, and Botswana’s Minister of International Relations, Phenyo Butale.
The two sides are expected to discuss ways to strengthen cooperation in priority sectors, including transport and logistics, communications and digital transformation, mineral resources and energy, finance, defence and security, justice, public works, housing and water resources.
The agenda also includes agriculture, fisheries, the environment, labour, gender and social development, youth and sport, education, culture, health, state administration and public service.
The ministerial session is being preceded by technical meetings between senior officials from both countries to prepare the main issues that will be submitted for consideration by the ministers.
On the Mozambican side, the technical discussions are being led by Hermenegildo Caetano, Director for Africa and the Middle East at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation.
Botswana’s technical delegation is being led by Thuso Ramodimoosi, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of International Relations.
The Permanent Joint Commission for Cooperation serves as a coordination mechanism between Mozambique and Botswana, allowing the two governments to assess the state of bilateral relations and identify new areas for partnership.
The ninth session is taking place in a context of efforts to strengthen relations between the two countries in economic, social, technological and security-related areas.
The two governments are expected to use the meeting to identify mechanisms capable of turning political understandings into concrete projects of mutual interest.
