Mozambican biomedical engineer Nely Áurea Psico, 29, has been nominated for the Emerging Professional Engineer of the Year award in the South Australia division of Engineers Australia, the organisation representing engineering professionals in the country.
The distinction is part of the Engineers Australia Excellence Awards, which recognise outstanding professionals and projects in the engineering sector. Each division selects a local winner, who then progresses to the national final.
Nely Psico holds a degree in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Sydney and currently works as a Remote Service Engineer at Philips Healthcare in Adelaide, South Australia.
In her role, she provides technical support for X-ray systems used in diagnosis and medical intervention procedures, including equipment that helps medical teams monitor procedures in real time.
During her university studies, Nely served as president of the Women in Engineering Society, where she was involved in initiatives aimed at connecting students with industry and encouraging greater participation of women in engineering.
She remains actively involved in professional and volunteer initiatives. She is Social Media Coordinator for the Biomedical Engineering College of Engineers Australia and a member of the South Australia Overseas Qualified Engineers committee.
The engineer began her education in Mozambique, attending Willow and Kitabu schools, before continuing her studies in Australia.
With the nomination, Nely Psico joins a group of young professionals recognised by Engineers Australia in South Australia, placing a Mozambican professional in the spotlight within the international biomedical engineering sector.
