A man in his 30s died on Monday under circumstances that are yet to be clarified at a bar in Matola H, Maputo province. The case sparked clashes between the victim’s relatives and people the family believes may have information about what happened.
According to the owner of the bar where the man was found, the victim began feeling unwell and showed signs of fatigue and intoxication. The owner said he was alerted by his son and later contacted the local neighbourhood chief and members of the young man’s family.
After the death was confirmed, relatives raised suspicions about a woman known for producing homemade alcoholic drinks in the area and went to her home seeking explanations.
The woman denied any involvement in the death, saying she did not know the young man and that he had not been at her home drinking on the day he died.
A friend of the victim also said the young man had not been at the woman’s home. According to his account, the two had been drinking a traditional beverage at another location and parted ways before 2 p.m.
With no conclusive information about the cause of death, relatives went to the woman’s home demanding answers. The situation escalated into tensions and physical clashes between those involved.
The family also claims that this may be the fourth death of a young person under what they describe as suspicious circumstances in the area and is calling on the authorities to investigate the cases.
Information gathered also indicates that the young man was allegedly assaulted on the Saturday before his death at a bar near his home after being accused of theft. However, no link has yet been established between the alleged assault and his death.
Authorities attended the scene following the incident and are expected to determine the circumstances and cause of death through forensic examinations.
The family is awaiting the results of the authorities’ investigation before holding the funeral, while the events leading up to the young man’s death remain unclear.
