The Maputo Municipal Council has admitted that it is only able to collect around 60% of the waste produced daily in the capital, leaving a significant amount of rubbish uncollected.
According to data presented by the Councillor for Infrastructure and Sanitation, João Munguambe, the city currently produces around 1,366 tonnes of waste per day.
“We are collecting 60%. The rest is in drainage ditches, along roadsides and in the sea,” Munguambe said.
The remarks were made during a clean-up campaign held along Costa do Sol Beach as part of World Cleanup Day activities, which brought together more than 500 volunteers.
Munguambe acknowledged that waste management remains one of the main sanitation challenges facing Maputo and said the solution cannot depend solely on the Municipal Council.
To reduce the collection gap, the municipality announced the distribution of 100 new waste containers in neighbourhoods with the highest levels of rubbish accumulation.
Of these, 80 are plastic containers with a capacity of 1,100 litres, while 20 are metal containers with a capacity of six cubic metres.
The municipality also plans to strengthen its fleet with five additional trucks and continue supporting the 45 micro-enterprises responsible for primary waste collection.
Munguambe also called for greater public participation in keeping the city clean, stressing that waste management must be seen as a shared and permanent responsibility.
Among the projects expected to improve waste management is the construction of the KaTembe sanitary landfill, which is planned to include waste sorting, recycling and gas capture systems for energy production.
The plan also includes the gradual closure of the Hulene dumpsite and its future rehabilitation.
During the Costa do Sol clean-up campaign, 3.5 tonnes of waste were collected, including 1.2 tonnes of plastic.
Authorities say that, in addition to strengthening waste collection capacity, changes in public behaviour will be necessary to reduce rubbish accumulation in streets, drainage channels and coastal areas.
