The cities of Maputo and Matola are at risk of low to moderate flooding over the next 48 hours due to forecasts of moderate to heavy rainfall in southern Mozambique, according to an alert issued on Wednesday, 30 September, by the National Directorate of Water Resources Management (DNGRH).
According to the institution, rainfall of between 30 and 50 millimetres is expected within a 24-hour period, with precipitation potentially exceeding 50 millimetres in some areas, increasing the risk of water accumulation in urban areas.
The forecast indicates the possibility of flooding in Maputo and Matola, while Chibuto district, in Gaza Province, could experience rain-induced erosion due to the intensity of the expected rainfall.
In response, the DNGRH has advised residents to adopt preventive measures, particularly in areas vulnerable to flooding and landslides.
The institution has urged people living in high-risk areas to exercise additional caution and, where necessary, leave locations that could be affected by flooding or landslides.
Authorities have also called on the population to regularly monitor weather forecasts and hydrological warnings issued by the relevant institutions to help prevent situations that could endanger lives and property.
The alert covers the next 48 hours, during which periods of more intense rainfall may occur in certain parts of southern Mozambique.
