Mozambique’s national football team drew 1-1 with Senegal on Friday, September 25, in the opening match of the qualification campaign for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
At a nearly full Zimpeto National Stadium, Senegal started the match on the front foot and created the first dangerous opportunities, while the Mambas looked to respond through quick transitions.
Mozambique had a good chance in the 13th minute, when Gildo found himself in a promising position following a cross from Guima, but failed to convert.
Senegal continued to apply pressure and opened the scoring in the 32nd minute. Nicolas Jackson took advantage of a loose ball inside the box to give the Lions of Teranga the lead.
Despite the difficulties, the Mambas managed to respond before half-time.
During first-half stoppage time, Geny Catamo connected with a cross following an indirect free kick and restored parity, sending both teams into the break with the score at 1-1.
The second half was more balanced. Mozambique’s technical team made changes in an effort to improve the team’s organisation and increase its attacking presence.
Both sides enjoyed periods of greater control, with Senegal looking to regain the lead and Mozambique trying to exploit spaces to threaten the opposing goal.
In the closing stages, the Mambas increased the pressure, encouraged by the support of the fans at Zimpeto National Stadium.
The referee added five minutes of stoppage time, during which Mozambique continued to push for a winning goal, but Senegal held on for the draw.
The result gives the Mambas their first point in Group J of the AFCON 2027 qualifying campaign.
In the other match in the group, Sudan defeated Ethiopia 1-0.
Mozambique will return to action in the second round of qualifiers, looking for their first win on the road to the tournament finals.
