Mozambique’s national football team, the Mambas, begins preparations this Monday, 21 September, in Maputo, ahead of the start of its 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign.
The first training session is expected to feature mainly players based in the domestic league and will take place at the Mahafil field, while foreign-based players are expected to join the squad progressively.
Mozambique will open its qualifying campaign on Friday, 25 September, against Senegal at the Zimpeto National Stadium in Maputo. The match is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
The fixture was initially expected to be played in Dakar, but it was moved to Maputo following an agreement between the Mozambican and Senegalese football federations.
After facing Senegal, the Mambas will return to the Zimpeto National Stadium on 29 September to play Sudan in their second Group J match.
Mozambique is in Group J alongside Senegal, Sudan and Ethiopia. The top two teams in the group will qualify for the final tournament of the 2027 AFCON, which will be hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.
National coach Chiquinho Conde called up 24 players for the two matches, as Mozambique looks to secure a third consecutive appearance at the Africa Cup of Nations finals.
This week’s training sessions will therefore be crucial for the Mambas as they prepare for their opening qualifier against Senegal.
