The Municipality of Marracuene has denied reports circulating on social media claiming that around 20 people drowned at Macaneta Beach during the large turnout recorded on Friday.
According to the President of the Marracuene Municipal Council, Shafee Sitadat, two deaths were confirmed, but both occurred outside the beach area and were not caused by drowning at the site.
“There were two deaths, as stated, but outside the beach,” the mayor clarified.
According to Sitadat, between 30,000 and 40,000 people travelled to Macaneta, in a day that required increased intervention from the authorities, Municipal Police and lifeguard teams.
Lifeguard Elias Nobel said the teams carried out around 30 interventions involving dangerous situations and attempted drownings.
Despite the high number of incidents, Nobel said no deaths by drowning were recorded at the beach.
The large concentration of people was also associated with minor crimes, including mobile phone thefts, as well as the accumulation of large amounts of rubbish on the beach and access roads.
The municipal president acknowledged problems linked to the behaviour of some visitors and announced that stricter measures will be adopted to strengthen safety, organisation and preservation of Macaneta Beach.
The following morning, cleaning teams were deployed to remove the accumulated waste, mainly bottles, plastics and broken glass.
The clean-up began in the early hours of the day and is expected to continue because of the large volume of rubbish left behind by visitors.
Authorities are urging beachgoers to use the available waste collection points and avoid leaving rubbish on the beach, particularly bottles and other sharp materials that may pose a danger to people and vehicles.
The municipality plans to strengthen organisational measures during periods of high attendance in order to reduce risks and improve safety conditions at Macaneta.
