By Osvaldo 1 min

The death toll from a road accident that occurred on Thursday night in Zavala district, Inhambane province, along National Road Number One (EN1), has risen to 24.

Initial reports indicated 17 deaths, but the toll was later revised to 24, according to information provided by Quissico Rural Hospital.

Of the 24 victims, 22 died at the scene of the accident, while two others later died at the health facility.

The accident involved a truck and a semi-collective passenger transport vehicle, commonly known in Mozambique as a “chapa”.

Preliminary information indicates that excessive speed may have been one of the causes of the accident, although an official statement from the authorities on the exact circumstances of the collision is still awaited.

Two people travelling in a military vehicle were also treated at Quissico Rural Hospital and have since been discharged.

Authorities continued operations at the scene to remove the bodies and the wreckage of the vehicles involved.

The Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) is expected to provide further details on the accident and the circumstances that led to the tragedy.
