Mozambique produced 25,474 tonnes of graphite in the first half of 2026, representing a 278% increase compared with the 6,734 tonnes recorded during the same period in 2025.
With this performance, the country has already exceeded the Government's full-year target by 72%. The annual target had been set at 14,815 tonnes, according to official January-to-June implementation data compiled by Lusa.
According to the Government document, the increase in production was driven by greater operational stability at the country's largest producer and the entry of a new company into operation in Niassa Province.
The performance confirms the recovery of a sector considered strategic to the global supply chain for electric vehicle batteries, following several years marked by operational constraints.
In 2025, Mozambique produced 67,078 tonnes of graphite, almost double the 34,899 tonnes recorded in 2024. National production had reached a peak of 165,946 tonnes in 2022 before falling to 97,346 tonnes in 2023.
Among the country's main producers is the Balama mine in Cabo Delgado, operated by Australian company Syrah Resources and considered one of the world's largest natural graphite operations outside China.
Company data show that between January and June this year, gross production at Balama reached around 25,800 tonnes, compared with 6,500 tonnes in the same period of 2025. Sales and shipments totalled approximately 26,600 tonnes.
Despite the recovery, Syrah acknowledges that operations remain affected by moderate demand for natural graphite outside China, global oversupply and competition from Chinese producers.
The company also intends to strengthen the link between graphite production in Mozambique and its Vidalia facility in the United States, which produces active anode material used in electric vehicle batteries.
In January, President Daniel Chapo inaugurated a graphite processing plant in Nipepe District, Niassa Province, valued at around 200 million US dollars.
The facility has the capacity to process up to 200,000 tonnes per year and currently employs more than 1,000 workers, with employment expected to exceed 2,000 once it reaches full capacity.
