A health worker responsible for the medicine storage facility at Massingir Health Centre, in Gaza province, has been suspended from duty and is under investigation over suspected involvement in the diversion of medicines intended exclusively for the National Health Service.
The case emerged after a citizen was found on September 10 in possession of medicines belonging to the Ministry of Health.
According to Massingir district administrator Sérgio Costa, during questioning the citizen identified the person responsible for the health facility’s medicine store as his supplier.
Following the allegation, a criminal case was opened against both individuals, while the district administration suspended the health worker to allow the investigation to proceed.
Costa said the measure is also intended to enable an administrative inquiry into the employee’s possible responsibility.
The case comes as the Gaza Provincial Health Directorate steps up inspections at health facilities.
Provincial Health Director Malassua Simango said five disciplinary proceedings are currently under way in connection with cases of mismanagement and illegal charges in the health sector.
According to Simango, one of the main challenges facing the authorities is the lack of formal complaints that would allow those involved in irregular practices to be identified and held accountable.
In addition to the Massingir case, health authorities are continuing to monitor a complaint involving the administration of expired medicine at Ndindiza Health Centre, in Chigubo district.
The case involves a 56-year-old man who said he was given medicine in April that had expired in December 2025.
A second monitoring visit to the health facility is expected before the case is concluded.
Elsewhere in the province, the morgue at Chicumbane Health Centre, in Limpopo district, has remained out of service for around five years, a situation attributed to abandoned construction work and the absence of a refrigeration unit.
The Provincial Health Directorate says it is seeking alternatives and partnerships to resolve the problem.
