The Governor of Gaza Province, Alfeu Constantino Cuna, has called for greater rigour, transparency and control in the management of schools, while also advocating for more efficient use of available teachers amid a shortage of teaching staff.
The directive was issued in Praia de Bilene during the opening of the 22nd edition of the Gaza Secondary Schools Forum, an event focused on sharing experiences and discussing the main challenges facing educational institutions in the province.
According to Cuna, improving the quality of education depends on integrated, participatory and transparent school management, with stronger coordination between school administrations, teachers and communities.
The Governor called for stronger school councils, arguing that communities should play an active role in the management, monitoring and preservation of educational institutions.
In the financial area, he recommended tighter control over funds allocated to schools, from expenditure planning to accountability, with the aim of preventing waste and ensuring greater transparency in the use of public resources.
Cuna also expressed concern about some school infrastructure being built without compliance with approved plans and technical standards.
While acknowledging the importance of community involvement in the construction of classrooms, the Governor warned that projects carried out without proper technical standards could put students and teachers at risk.
One of the main challenges highlighted is the shortage of teachers. Some schools rely on overtime and assign teachers additional classes to meet existing needs.
In response, Cuna recommended a better distribution of teachers and the reorganisation of workloads to avoid situations in which some teachers have no assigned classes or fail to complete the required working hours.
The Governor also called for improved punctuality and attendance among education professionals, describing these as important factors for the proper functioning of schools and better learning outcomes.
The Provincial Government’s approach is therefore focused on improving the management of existing resources, strengthening accountability among school administrators and increasing community participation in finding solutions to challenges facing the education sector in Gaza.
