The funeral ceremonies for Mozambican visual artist Ídasse Tembe take place this Monday, 21 September, in Maputo, following his death on Thursday at the age of 71 after an illness.
The wake is scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m. at Maputo City Hall, followed by the cremation of his body at Lhanguene Cemetery at around 11:00 a.m.
Ídasse Tembe died on Thursday at Maputo Central Hospital, where he had been admitted for several days.
Born Ídasse Ekson Malendza Tembe, the artist turned 71 in July and built a career spanning more than four decades, with a strong focus on painting and drawing.
Throughout his career, Ídasse Tembe developed a body of work marked by creativity and artistic expression, becoming one of the recognised figures in Mozambique’s visual arts scene.
His work, however, extended beyond the visual arts. He was also involved in cinema, music and literature, building a multidisciplinary career that earned him recognition both in Mozambique and abroad.
Ídasse Tembe was once considered one of the ten most creative artists on the African continent, in a career marked by diverse forms of artistic expression and more than 40 years of creative work.
Relatives, friends, fellow artists, representatives of the cultural sector and admirers are expected to attend Sunday’s ceremonies to pay their final respects to the Mozambican visual artist.
