US President Donald Trump has launched a streaming channel called “Trump TV” amid an escalating dispute between the White House and several major American media organisations.
The new channel, available through the official White House website, offers continuous programming featuring speeches, public appearances, videos and other content selected by the Trump administration.
The launch came after Trump barred journalists from CNN, MS NOW and Politico from accessing the White House. The President justified the decision by accusing the three organisations of publishing “fake news”, a claim disputed by the media outlets.
CNN, MS NOW and Politico subsequently filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration, arguing that their exclusion violates constitutional protections related to freedom of speech and freedom of the press.
The dispute has also affected the presidential television pool system, through which major broadcasters share footage from presidential events when access is restricted.
Following CNN’s exclusion, other major networks, including ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox News, declined to replace the broadcaster in the pool, disrupting the usual coverage arrangement.
The White House argues that physical access to its premises is not an automatic right for media organisations, while maintaining that journalists remain free to report on and criticise the administration.
The affected media outlets dispute that position and argue that they were excluded because of the nature of their journalistic coverage.
As the dispute continues, “Trump TV” gives the White House its own platform to distribute presidential speeches, appearances and other content directly, without relying on coverage produced by major television networks.
